BEREC workshop: Satellite technologies in mobile communications

23 April 2024

Mobile phone and satellite

On 22 May 2024 at the office of the Bundesnetzagentur (BNetza) in Mainz, Germany, BEREC will hold a hybrid workshop exploring emerging trends in satellite communication and direct-to-device non-terrestrial networks.  BEREC will invite stakeholders to set out their views on the potential opportunities and challenges from such networks including views on potential market access issues in Europe.

For example, the workshop will serve as a platform for active discussion on regulatory issues associated with non-terrestrial networks in mobile and fixed communication networks, such as roaming, handover, numbering, interoperability, market access and authorisation, among others.

The event will be held at the office of the Bundesnetzagentur (BNetzA), Canisiusstraße 21, 55122 Mainz, Germany. Please note that participation at the workshop is subject to prior registration. Due to high level of interest, in-person registration may be limited to a “first come, first served” basis.  The workshop has a full program with presentations on context, angles and challenges in the area of satellite communication, the different stakeholders involved in regulation, the different ecosystems that are evolving, and about future opportunities and challenges. But there will also be time during  lunch and coffee breaks to facilitate networking and discussions for in-person attendees. We encourage you to register as soon as possible to secure your spot.

BEREC will also provide Webex dial-in details for attendees that register their presence for online participation, only.

Based on the findings and recommendations discussed during the workshop, BEREC experts will prepare a summary report. The document will be passed to the BEREC Board of Regulators for adoption and publication in October 2024.
