BEREC welcomes the agreement on the extension of the Roaming Regulation in the EU

09 December 2021

Citizens of the EU will continue to call, text, and use mobile data, while traveling within the EU at no extra costs and with the same quality they experience at home. The European Parliament and the Council have agreed to extend the Roaming Regulation until 2032. The extended regulation will enter into force on 1 July 2022 and will introduce new rules expanding the benefits of "Roam like at home" for travellers as additional advantages and protections for consumers – higher quality of services, prevention of unexpectedly high charges, and awareness and access to emergency services abroad. The agreement reached is subject to approval by the Council and the full European Parliament.

BEREC welcomes the agreement between the co-legislators. National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) and BEREC have contributed to the consistent application of the Roaming Regulation since its first adoption and, therefore, have a high level of expertise. BEREC is looking forward to contributing to the smooth implementation of the new regulation.
