BEREC’s input to the future of the electronic communications sector and its infrastructure public consultation

19 May 2023

As an independent and future orientated expert body, BEREC welcomes the opportunity to respond to the European Commission’s exploratory consultation on the future of the electronic communications sector and its infrastructure that considers the most appropriate actions to ensure future-proof of its efforts in the electronic communications sector.

BEREC prepared the answers based on its constituent national regulatory authorities’ collective perspectives and experience. Also, BEREC recently adopted its Action plan for 2030. Towards 2030, BEREC aims at actively facilitating and fostering open, secure, high-quality, competitive, and sustainable digital ecosystems that will be the key to empowering people and businesses in future societies.

As the questionnaire focused on a wide range of stakeholders, BEREC has complemented its targeted responses to certain questions within a 10-pager document, publishing additional documents as annexes to this response, on BEREC's website.

The rapid transformation of digital markets and challenging geopolitical and economic situations have set a pivotal moment to assess, where the EU electronic communications sector stands and what are its future perspectives. The explanatory consultation launched by the EC on 23 February 2023, besides other, focuses on the technological and market developments, fairness for consumers, potential barriers to Single Market and fair contribution by all digital market players.
