The incoming BEREC Chair calls for joint efforts to build a future-proof digital Europe
At the International Institute of Communications (IIC) Digital Communications and Media Forum, the incoming BEREC Chair Alejandra de Iturriaga (CNMC, Spain) highlighted the need for joint efforts to address shared challenges stemming from increasing complexity and growing geopolitical risks, also in the electronic communications and digital services sectors.
What is at stake is whether Europe can achieve these ambitions in a way that is secure, competitive, inclusive and sustainable, Alejandra de Iturriaga confirmed.
A clear roadmap
Alejandra de Iturriaga went on to explain the BEREC Strategy for 2026–2030 with its mission-driven roadmap for delivering independent, forward-looking, consistent and high-quality regulation of digital infrastructures and services. The Strategy will guide BEREC’s work in the coming years as it converts long-term objectives into concrete actions. Close cooperation between BEREC, the European institutions, the national regulatory authorities, stakeholders and international partners will be essential for its successful implementation. These collective efforts will help ensure that Europe remains digitally competitive, resilient and future-proof.
High-level priorities
The Strategy is built around five high-level priorities that include promoting full connectivity and supporting open, competition-driven digital ecosystems. BEREC places strong emphasis on empowering end users and contributing to environmentally sustainable, secure and resilient digital infrastructures. BEREC aims to strengthen its own capabilities by enhancing its agility, independence, inclusiveness and efficiency. This includes improving working practices and communication to ensure transparency, high-quality deliverables and effective engagement with stakeholders. Public consultations, debriefings, workshops and the annual Stakeholders’ Forum play a key role in supporting a structured dialogue.
These priorities also reflect BEREC’s active engagement with ongoing and upcoming legislative initiatives — including the Digital Networks Act — ensuring that regulatory expertise contributes directly to shaping Europe’s future digital framework.
